7 Spanish Series That You Should Be Watching Right Now

Do you like to watch series to improve your Spanish? Definitely it is one of the best ways to work on your listening skills and expand your vocabulary. 

I am sure you already know the most popular Spanish series: La casa de papelElite or Las chicas del cable. If you haven’t watched them yet, they should be on top of your list. Also, the last season of Las chicas del cable is already available on Netflix.

Apart from these series, there are other addictive Spanish series that you will enjoy watching. In this post, I will share with you the Spanish series that everyone in Spain is watching this year.

Spanish series: White Lines (2020)

White Lines traces the story of a woman who tries to solve the mystery of the death of her brother, who was a famous DJ, disappearing from Ibiza many years ago. It is a British-Spanish mystery thriller series created by Álex Pina. [Plot from republicworld.com]

An interesting point about White Lines is that, depending on the scene, the characters speak Spanish or English. It is perfect for Spanish learners!

We are CactusBCN Languages, a Spanish language school located in Barcelona.

In March 2020, the pandemic situation encouraged us to start teaching online. All our students were happy with this change so we will keep teaching online for a while.

The school was founded and is run by enthusiastic teachers. Out team was teaching Spanish around the world for a few years and when we come back to Spain, we decided to start our own school. 

It is a small local business. We work with small groups because we like to get to know all our students and design personalized lessons.

Spanish series: Perdida (2020)

Perdida is a thriller where a man gets caught in Colombian customs with drugs, his goal is to end up in prison to contact who kidnapped his daughter years ago. [Plot from imdb.com]

The story takes place in Spain and Colombia, so you can listen to different Spanish accents.

Spanish series: Vivir sin permiso (2018)

The plot of  Vivir sin permiso (‘Unauthorized Living’) follows the story of Nemo Bandeira, a drug lord with a clean businessman facade, who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Although he tries to keep the news away from his family it becomes difficult while he tries to assess who his successor might be. [Plot from wikipedia.org]

Vivir sin permiso takes place in Galicia and some of the characters have a Galician accent and slang.

Spanish series: Valeria (2020)

Valeria is a Spanish drama web television series. The plot revolves around Valeria (Diana Gómez), who is a writer, feeling something is missing in her marriage and writing. [Plot form wikiperia.org] The series takes place in Madrid and Valencia and the characters are around 30 years old. Watching this series you can learn a lot about slang words in Spanish. Spanish series: Toy boy (2019)

The plot of Toy Boy follows Hugo when he gets released from prison after seven years. He had been imprisoned after being found next to the burnt body of his client, Macarena’s husband on a boat. Seven years later, his case is re-opened as a major law firm takes it up as a pro-bono act. Macarena belongs to a wealthy and influential business family and her company’s rivalry with the Rojas family is depicted to be at the center of the mysterious murder. [Plot from thecinemaholic.com]

Toy boy takes place in Marbella Marbella, a city and municipality in southern Spain, belonging to the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia.  Marbella is particularly noted for the presence of aristocrats, celebrities and wealthy people;  it is a popular destination for luxury yachts, and increasingly so for cruise ships.

Spanish series: El vecino (2019)

El vecino (The Neighbor) is a Spanish superhero comedy web television series, created by Miguel Esteban and Raúl Navarro based on the comic series El Vecino by Santiago García and Pepo Pérez. 

The Neighbor follows the story of a hapless man, who one day inadvertently gains a mysterious power. With the help of his friendly neighbor, he begins to master his newfound abilities to fight evil and at the same time, conceal them from the public eye, including his suspicious ex-girlfriend.

Spanish series: Fariña (2018)

Sito Miñanco, a fisherman who is skilled in speedboat handling, starts to work in a tobacco smuggling ring led by Vicente Otero Pérez ‘Terito’, the head of the Galician clans of the Ría de Arousa. Miñanco then starts his own ring alongside two friends. The different clans consider starting to traffic hashish, but Terito is against smuggling illegal drugs. Later, on a trip to Panama to launder money, Sito contacts traffickers who want to introduce cocaine into Europe through Galicia. 

The series is based on Nacho Carretero’s nonfiction book Fariña. The name of the series means Flour, slang for cocaine in Galician.  the series premiered internationally on Netflix as Cocaine Coast
