How to Form the Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto
To build this tense, you only need two elements commonly used in Spanish grammar:
- HABER in the imperfect tense (había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían)
- A past participle (hablado, comido, vivido…)

1. To express what happened first
- Cuando llegué, María ya había cenado.
- Cuando empezó la reunión, yo ya había leído el informe.
2. To give background or context in a story
Había vivido en México antes de mudarme a Barcelona.
Ya había visto esa película cuando la pusieron en clase.
3. To explain causes in the past
- No vino porque había perdido el autobús.
- Estaba de mal humor porque había dormido fatal.
