What Are the 5 Best Books for Learning Spanish? Spanish Teacher Answers [2024]

Do you know why at our school we don’t use textbooks in Spanish lessons? Because we prefer to adapt each Spanish lesson to the current learning needs and interests of our students.

Their age, their goals, their favorite topics, and overall, their learning style. Mostly, I bring to class activities for practicing Spanish in a real context, focusing on speaking, as it is the hardest skill to acquire for most of the students.

Teaching without a textbook means a big effort. Lessons planning takes more time and imagination. However, after a while it becomes easier and you discover yourself creating effective lessons about topics that you never thought about before.

I am passionate about creating my own teaching materials or combine different resources from books or other teachers in order to design the perfect Spanish class.

Despite this, Spanish textbooks are a perfect complimentary resource. Even if you need to work on your grammar as if you want to improve your vocabulary I can recommend several books.

That’s why today I will answer this question today: What are the 5 best books for learning Spanish? [2021]

¡Hola!

We are CactusBCN Languages, a Spanish language school located in Barcelona.

In March 2020, the pandemic situation encouraged us to start teaching online. All our students were happy with this change so we will keep teaching online for a while.

The school was founded and is run by enthusiastic teachers. Out team was teaching Spanish around the world for a few years and when we come back to Spain, we decided to start our own school.

It is a small local business. We work with small groups because we like to get to know all our students and design personalized lessons.

We are looking forward to meeting you in class!

What are the 5 best books for learning Spanish? The best books to learn Spanish Grammar

Dale a la gramática

Learn Spanish dale a la gramática

¡Dale a la gramática! is made of four levels (A1, A2, B1, B2). Each title has more than 200 grammar activities in order to practice and review the most complicated aspects of Spanish grammar.

To focus on the grammar structure, the vocabulary is easy and an example is provided for each exercise. Each unit contains between 6 and 10 pages.

I never use this kind of exercise in a group lesson but for some students is helpful to do these kinds of repetitive exercises after the class to memorize better the hardest contents.

If you are stuck with Spanish grammar and conjugation, this is your book.

Uso de los pasados

books to learn Spanish

Spanish past tenses are one of the hardest parts of Spanish Grammar. The use of past tenses has a lot of rules and the conjugation is formed by many irregular verbs. That’s why I recommend this book to my A2-B1 students in order to take some time every day working on past tenses.

This book is divided into 6 units. Each unit is about the conjugation and use of a different Spanish past tense (pretérito perfecto compuesto, pretérito perfecto simple – also known as indefinido–, pretérito imperfecto y otros tiempos del pasado) except from unit 3 that contrasts pretérito indefinido and pretérito perfecto and unit 5, that contrasts pretérito indefinido and imperfecto

At the end of the book you will find a list of the most frequent regular and irregular verbs and also the answers to each exercise.

Uso indicativo subjuntivo

spanish subjuntivo book

Uso del indicativo y del subjuntivo is a new version of Tiempo para practicar el indicativo y el subjuntivo. Each unit has different exercises to practice all tenses of Spanish subjuntivo: presente de subjuntivo, pretérito perfecto de subjuntivo, pretérito imperfecto de subjuntivo y pretérito pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo.

It is addressed to intermediate students (level B1 and B2). It includes an online platform to keep practicing or use as a test.

At the end of the book you will find a list of the most frequent regular and irregular verbs and also the answers to each exercise.

I hope you like my selection of books! Did you use any of them before? Did you practice Spanish with a different book? How was it?
